WELCOME TO VIENNA
Dear colleagues:
The Austrian Society of Dermatology and Venerology has decided to bid for the 23rd World Congress of Dermatology in 2015. We hope that our bid will attract interest in the international dermatological community and ultimately receive great support.
We suggest Vienna to be the venue of the World Congress 2015 for many reasons.
Vienna has a long and outstanding tradition in dermatology, beginning with Joseph Plenck and Ferdinand von Hebra, and carried on by many others until today.
Our society is one of the oldest scientific dermatological associations in the world,
and it was the first society to organise annual national meetings in central Europe.
In 1892, the 2nd World Congress of Dermatology was held in Vienna with Moriz Kaposi as the host and president. Then, the congress met at the University – a
location which would be clearly out of the question today.
Fortunately Vienna has a brand new and ultramodern convention centre which could host the World Congress in style. The “Vienna Messe-Center” can accommodate up to 20,000 participants.
It is equipped with large and comfortable lecture halls,
widely-acclaimed and large exhibition facilities for our
industrial partners, an elegant but relaxed atmosphere and
advanced technological equipment to satisfy the most
demanding needs of the delegates. The Messe-Center is
just within walking distance from downtown Vienna and its cultural
and architectural resplendence.
Vienna is situated right in the heart of Europe. Since its days as the capital of the Austro-Hungarian monarchy,
Vienna has been the melting pot of many peoples, languages and cultures, all of which
can still be seen and sensed when exploring the city. During the fin de siècle, the
multicultural ingenuity of Vienna paved the way to modernity as a fountain of important innovations in art and sciences – including medicine.
Strolling through the ancient courts of the “Allgemeines Krankenhaus”, one gets
a feeling of the spirit of the “Wiener Medizinische Schule” and its protagonists,
among them our dermatological forefathers. When visiting the new university
and hospital facilities nearby, you can easily recognize that the old spirits have
transformed but are still very alive and procreative.
Vienna is a very appropriate place for dermatologic conventions: easy to reach, beautiful, green and safe. You may enjoy architecture, satisfy your craving for culture, arts and good food and, what is more important, for good dermatology.
We invite you to come and see!
